My blueberry bushes are about 30 years old and have never been pruned.

} May 20, If you make a cut on one of its branches, if the branch is green underneath it is fine but if the branch is brown and feels hollow it is probably dead.

Blueberry bushes cope in below 0 temperatures, so pop it in a sunny spot in the garden, well watered and prune back a few branches and hopefully it will come back to life%(69).

By doing so, you're allow the bush to focus its resources on canes growing straight up, which will be stronger and help you create a better-shaped bush.

The general rule is to remove 1/3 to 1/2 of the top of young blueberry plants when transplanting them to the field (Fig. 1). Also remove weak, twiggy, growth near the base of the plant and side branches bearing flower buds. All flower buds should be removed during the first year, either by pruning or treemulching.pw Size: 1MB.

Blueberry bushes may not produce many berries because of reasons related to the planting site. Ideally, plant blueberry bushes in full sun. They may tolerate some shade, but if blueberry bushes do not receive sufficient sunlight, their berry production can be reduced. To keep them producing well, blueberry bushes need to be pruned every year. If your bushes have never been trimmed, be careful not to go overboard the first year: Remove no more than two or three of the oldest canes (more than seven years old).

Remove any. When the bushes are mature after several years, remove older central canes and prune inward pointing laterals back to the main cane. Prune when dormant in late winter or early spring. Fall pruning is not recommended, because the new shoots could be killed by a cold winter.

If necessary, thin out the dormant fruit buds to get fewer but larger berries.
