Cut the root from the tree.

Generally, you can safely prune roots that are times the diameter away from your, if your tree has a diameter of 3 feet, only cut tree roots feet away from the the area you'll cut, and dig a hole all the way around the root until it is completely exposed. While trenchers are designed for digging through soil, some trencher blades allow you to cut through roots and other underground obstacles as well.

Without one of these blades, you might end up damaging the trencher, breaking teeth off of the chain or possibly even breaking the chain itself.

Scoop the loose earth away from the root with the hoe blade of the Pulaski, and remove the dirt with a round-point shovel.

If you get a decently sized trencher that looks like a giant chainsaw and pull it back to you like you're supposed to. Although these things aren't designed to cut roots. I've never seen a root yet that the ones that look like a giant chainsaw won't cut.

You just have to inch your way back. Here is an example of the trencher cutting through a tree trunk! This shows how the trencher can cut through tree roots while it's trenching through the dirt.

Disclaimer - The ky is not intended for cutting trees, please do not try this at home. Our normal chain uses a combo of rock and dirt teeth, the chain in this video has only our rock.

You can build a heated enclosure and wait for the ground to thaw within it.

Although a trencher can be used to cut through roots, it was designed for creating trenches in soil and may not be able to handle large roots. Writer Bio Born in West Virginia, Jack Gerard now.
